Sun, Sea & Sex at the Southwold Literature Festival

Ways With Words
Southwold Literature Festival
11-15 November 2010

PRESS RELEASE:

Sun, Sea & Sex at the Southwold Lit. Fest.

It’s not often you find a literature festival serving up sun, sea and sex to its audiences.  After all, there has never been much of a crossover between your typical lit. fest. crowd and the average 18-30 holiday scene.  What’s more, mid-November on the tempestuous Suffolk coast may not seem the most obvious setting for such a summery mix of pleasures.   But the Southwold Literature Festival programme (11-15 November) promises all of this and more this winter.

SUN: Past editor of The Sun, David Yelland, will talk about his first novel The Truth About Leo, the story of an alcoholic who brings chaos to his young son’s life (Fri 12 Nov. 4pm).  David Yelland was, by his own admission, drunk for most of the five years he edited The Sun.  He stopped drinking in 2005 when he realised it would kill him.  He will discuss how the troubles in his own life shaped the novel and why writing it was the most important thing he has ever done.

SEA: Best-selling author of The Cloudspotter’s Guide, Gavin Pretor-Pinney, takes a break from cloudspotting to turn his attention to wavewatching (Mon. 15 No. 10.30am).  Mesmerised by the waves rolling into shore on a Cornish beach one February afternoon, Gavin Pretor-Pinney wondered where they had come from, and decided to find out.  He soon realised that waves don’t just appear on the ocean, they are everywhere around us, and our lives depend on them.  With the wintry north sea as a backdrop, he will explain how we can tune into the shapes, colours and forms of life’s many undulations.

SEX: Set over a long summer weekend in Suffolk, Blake Morrison’s latest novel is the chilling story of a rivalrous friendship.  Saturated with sexual desire, jealousy and revenge, The Last Weekend is a deftly crafted page-turner, where little can be taken for granted and nothing is quite as it seems.   Blake Morrison will discuss the haunting themes at the centre of this compelling novel (Sun 14 Nov. 11.30am).

Other writers joining us beside the seaside include: Roy Hattersley, Chris Mullin, Alain de Botton, Polly Toynbee, Will Hutton and Josceline Dimbleby.

Tickets to individual events cost £9 but festival-goers can make a weekend of it by taking advantage of a festival package.  Half board packages with accommodation at either The Swan or The Crown hotels in the centre of Southwold and tickets to all events start at £394 per person.

The full festival programme is available online at www.wayswithwords.co.uk or as a brochure by contacting the Box Office: Tel. 01803 867373 Email admin@wayswithwords.co.uk
