Ten Years of Words by the Water Festival of Words and Ideas
Ten Years of Words by the Water Festival of Words and Ideas
4–13 March 2011 – at Theatre by the Lake, Keswick, Cumbria
Who would have thought that each year it would be normal for over 100 eminent speakers to come to the quiet town of Keswick within 10 days in March? Yet this is now a regular occurrence. This March Maureen Lipman, Claire Tomalin, Michael Frayn, Raymond Blanc, Melvyn Bragg, Roy Hattersley, Brian Moore, Roger Scruton, Peter Snow, AC Grayling, Michael Buerk – and over a 100 more speakers will be coming to the Words by the Water festival; now after 10 years renamed as a festival of words and ideas because it is precisely that.
It’s 10 years since Kay Dunbar and Stephen Bristow, the festival directors, visited Theatre by the Lake, saw the sunset over Derwentwater, and decided that it would be a perfect venue for a Cumbrian literature festival. So it has proved. Not only because of the stunning setting but because of the enthusiasm of the visitors for ideas, books and stimulating talks at Words by the Water. The Northern region provides thousands of visitors. Some live in Cumbria and come and go in the day but, from the start, many came from Scotland, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Lancashire and stayed several days. Now it has become a feature in the calendar of those who enjoy listening to entertaining or challenging speakers and people travel from as far afield as Cornwall, Suffolk and Kent – from all corners of the country in fact – and some from Europe too.
Over 10 years of Words by the Water there have been some memorable and momentous events. If you haven’t been before don’t miss the special 10th festival. There will be many new and interesting happenings.
This year Sky Arts HD have become the Broadcast Partner of the festival and are bringing new and exciting elements to the festival.
On SATURDAY 12 MARCH Sky Arts will record two editions of The Book Show at Words by the Water, both presented by Mariella Frostrup.
The 9.40 – 11 am programme will include Joanna Trollope, Valerie Grove, Jackie Kay.
The second programme at 12.10pm – 1.30pm features John Simpson, Salley Vickers and Chris Mullin.
The Book Show will be recorded on the above dates at Theatre by the Lake but is broadcast on Thursdays at 7pm on Sky Arts 1 HD so it will be possible to see the Words by the Water events at a later date.
Another innovation – courtesy of Sky Arts is the SKY ARTS DEN at Words by the Water, in The Circle Gallery at Theatre by the Lake.
There visitors will find workshops, performances and many events to kick start their creativity in all areas: there will be a full programme of activities each day throughout the festival – all free and a schedule can be downloaded from the festival website.
You can sign up for these workshops in person at the WBTW information desk at the theatre from Friday 4 March onwards; all are subject to availability of course.
Sky Arts will also run its Sky Arts Get Creative Fund at the festival, which offers one person the chance to win a £1,000 to fund a course on their creative passions. Visitors to the festivals will be invited to describe why they feel they deserve a scholarship, and which talent they would like to pursue. The winner will be asked to write a weekly blog on the Sky Arts website as they develop their talents.
There are more reasons than ever to join all the enthusiasts at the 10th Words by the Water.
