Southwold Words by the Water – the Lake District Ways With Words Festival of Words and Ideas at Dartington Hall

Italy - Writing, Art and Italian Language Holidays

In late September each year Ways With Words organises holiday courses in writing, art and Italian language. These are relaxed, informal holidays hosted by Ways With Words' directors, Kay Dunbar and Stephen Bristow. There are taught courses offered by professional authors, artists and language teachers and aimed at beginners as well as the more experienced. There's lots of flexibility and choice, swimming in the pool, discussion and book groups, walking, visits to nearby cultural centres, films, talks and of course, wonderful Italian food usually eaten al fresco.

Nothing is compulsory; participants can use the time and place as they wish. We want everyone to find the right pace for themselves, to be able to savour the beautiful environment and to go home totally refreshed.

Dates for 2018 are:
22 - 29 September and 29 September - 6 October

Our tutors for 2018 are as follows:

WEEK ONE (22 – 29 September 2018)

Mark is an established author and journalist - and also a talented watercolourist. He has tutored for Ways With Words in Italy where his teaching style has been greatly appreciated by course members.
Mark’s work spans a wide cross-section. He has been a travel writer, written articles for a variety of national newspapers and magazines, and been a ghost writer for several different books. His most recent book, Fest, is a crime fiction novel set at a literature festival.

Charles is an outstanding figurative painter who has had several exhibitions of his work. A film-maker and an experienced teacher, he was previously the Dean of the Arts at the University of Cumbria. Since retirement he has lived in Le Marche, about 2 hours from Villa Pia. Altogether he has worked in UK art colleges for more than 30 years. During that time besides being an artist, he has also been a designer, illustrator and writer in publishing and television. This will be the fifth year that Charles has been a tutor on this course. His commitment, insight and gentle encouragement are much appreciated by course members.

WEEK TWO (29 Sept – 6 October 2018)

Wendy Holden has written more than thirty books including two novels. She has had numerous works transferred to radio and television.
A journalist for eighteen years, her non-fiction titles have chiefly chronicled the lives of remarkable subjects, including the international bestseller Born Survivors which tells the true story of three young mothers who hid their pregnancies from the Nazis and gave birth in the concentration camp system. She lives in Suffolk, England, with her husband and two dogs and divides her time between the UK and the US.

Chantale studied French and Italian at Birmingham and Grenoble Universities which led to a career in teaching modern languages in the UK to adults. She writes:
“My knowledge of the Italian language has been a passport to many stays in Italy exploring the language, culture and art. My aim is to give an understanding of basic communication and culture to enhance the experience of being in Italy.
I love to include Italian stories, songs, poetry and music in my courses. Opportunities for communicating with local Italians will be explored.
I aim to create a comfortable, stress-free learning experience with something for all levels but mainly catering for beginners.
Ci vediamo presto.”
